Festival of Archaeology 2013 – A Roman Invasion!

Archaeology

A fun filled weekend packed with living history events is coming soon near Snowdonia hotels. If you chose July for you holiday in Wales this year you will not be disappointed. Snowdonia hotels are gearing up for the Festival of Archaeology. The festival will bring a Roman Invasion event to Caernarfon. The event will include a tented encampment, and even a parade through Caernarfon town! The festival will take place on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of July 2013 and sees the Romans returning to Wales after being absent for over a thousand years.

This is an educational day of fun for all the family, with activities for young Romans to get involved in, such as dressing as a roman, getting into the kids army, as well as getting your hands on a bow and arrow and doing some archery. There will be a chance to see how the Romans lived, see roman objects and get the truth from them in person! The Living History events gives you the chance to meet the Romans, taste Roman cookery and get involved with a mystery excavation.

The Festival will be held on the Segontium Roman Fort grounds.
Caernarfon’s Segontium Roman Fort was built to defend the Roman territories from the rebellious Welsh Celtic tribes and the fort was built to hold an auxiliary garrison of one thousand! The Segontium was one of the main forts of the Roman occupation of Wales.

The name of the fort ‘Segontium’ is implicit of the surrounding town Caernarfon, because ‘Caer’ means fort, and the name Caernarfon is a corrupted form of ‘Caer yn ar-Fon’. Meaning ‘Fort in the land opposite Mon’. Snowdonia hotels are well situated near this historically rich venue and many others in the land of North Wales. Snowdonia contains evidence of its vibrant history and these artefacts can still be experienced today.

If this spurs an interest in the historical within you, there’s a chance to sign up to help with the nearby Llanbeblig excavation during the weekend. Discover history for yourself!

This event is just one of a thousand taking place across the UK as part of the Festival of Archaeology. From the 13th-28th July archaeology will be celebrated all over Britain. Events will explore the historical significance of our land from ancient people to Victorians. People will be invited to get excited about archaeology and try out different practices from ages gone by.
