Plas Newydd Invites Visitors for a 1930's Style House Party

Bangor Hotel If you are always watching period dramas such as Downton Abbey and are a fan of period and vintage style the stately home of Plas Newydd is opening its doors on the 15th and 16th  December for a 1930’s style house party.A butler will welcome you to the National Trust owned property which is the former home of the Marquess of Anglesey.   It is uniquely placed on the shore of the Menai Straits and it boasts spectacular views of the Snowdonia mountain range. You can family sample life in the 1930’s for the Marquess of Anglesey’s family with a unique insight into their lives.Children did not have computer games or television and spent their time rolling down grassy banks and flying kites and the beautiful grounds are a perfect place to recapture your childhood. The family also has an extensive archive of family films which tell interesting stories about the family and capture family life from the time spent playing sports to dining in the dining room. Lady Anglesey’s bedroom is a time capsule from the 1930’s and is revered for its opulent interiors and design and her things are placed around the room as if she was still there. Lady Anglesey was in charge of the interior design of Plas Newydd and her taste is one of the many reasons why people visit Plas Newydd from all over the world.

Plas Newydd has an authentic 1930s “Old Dairy Tea Room” which offers some of Anglesey’s finest food and produce on offer to visitors. Whether it is artisan baking, welsh Cider or Mon  Ar Lwy Anglesey produced  ice cream which takes your fancy,  you are guaranteed to have an unforgettable time at the 1930’s house party.  There is also a quirky second hand bookshop, with all books donated by supporters of Plas Newydd which ensures that you can grab a souvenir of your day no matter what your budget.

The interior of Plas Newydd is admired for its association with early twentieth century artist and illustrator Rex Whistler and the building contains the largest painting produced by the artist, a mural in the dining room, as well as an exhibition.  There is enough to keep you occupied throughout the day with a reputed military museum which contains authentic relics from the Marquess of Angleseys time serving Britain in the Battle for Waterloo.  Visitors with green fingers will be able to walk around the stunning gardens of Plas Newydd with an Australasian arboretum, a summer terrace and massed hydrangeas adding autumnal tones to the houses landscape.  You can also keep an eye out for a family of rare red squirrels which are the newest residents of the Plas Newydd House and Gardens.

The house is easily reachable from the A55 with a short drive across the Menai Bridge leading you to the cosy village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch;  the longest place name in the whole of Europe!
