Open door days is an opportunity to celebrate the architecture and heritage of Wales by enjoying a range of buildings and heritage sights for absolutely free! This takes place each September where sights which normally charge a varied amount for entry are open to all for no charge at all.

These sights which normally open for free sometimes also offer a new and special exhibit or some behind the scenes material as an added bonus. The list includes all kinds of different sights, from manor houses, churches, castles, museums, Farms, Guided walks and so much more.

A full list is available online at www.opendoorsdays.org.uk, and you may be able to find something that suits you. All this is to encourage an increase in the love of culture, history and architecture in all kinds of people within wales. This is the largest volunteer led event in the Welsh heritage sector, and with over 400 sights taking part with over 700 separate events, so check out which sights are for free and when, or you’ll miss out on the ones you want to see the most.

One of the first of these events that kicks off ‘Open Doors 2012’ is St. Elian’s church on the 1st of September, 10:00 to 16:00; this is one of the most fascinating and well preserved medieval Celtic churches on the isle of Anglesey. Originally an early ‘clas’ church, the earliest masonry that survives is from the 12th to 15th century, the building holds a very unusual tower which has a pyramidal spire (this is dated 1675). The church’s interior has many wood carvings and a rood screen, this features a prominent painting of a skeleton. Witness this and so much more that wales has to offer for absolutely free; Open door days 2012.
