Award winning centre helps change lives around

A WIDOWER who was told he would never walk again has had his life turned around by a Penmaenmawr Respite Centre.

The Centre offers physical and emotional support to those living with chronic and life-limiting conditions in the UK.

Three years ago, Thomas  from Manchester was ready to give up on life after he was told he would never be able to walk again.

But after hearing about  Tyddyn Bach Trust in Penmaenmawr, Thomas went through a life changing process.

The 40-year-old was diagnosed as HIV positive, and received the devastating news just after his wife passed away.

The medication he began taking had such severe side effects that it left him in a wheelchair.

Unable to walk and care for himself, giving up seemed like the only option.

He told the Weekly News,"The doctor said I was never going to walk. That brought me down. At one point it was touch and go. I was very sick."

With the help of staff at TBT, Thomas was able to regain mental strength and gradually stop using the wheelchair. Although his mobility is still poor, he is now able to walk again.

"It was the best thing I ever did. It helped me out mentally and physically. Here I am pottering around now very happily," laughed Thomas.

Thomas now makes a special journey to volunteer at the Centre. He is using his unique life experience to accompany other patients on their journey.

North Wales AM Mark Isherwood is a patron of the Centre and is urging the Welsh Assembly to invest in respite care.

Wales has the only tailored social respite care and support centre in the UK, but unfortunately it appears to be fighting a losing battle to convince referring organisations in Wales that respite care is a vital resource and one that could be better supported through referrals in Wales.

Online Forum is at last here!

Web marketing specialist      Livetech has donated a brand new interactive website specifically created for Tyddyn Bach Trust; allowing those affected by the virus to discuss issues surrounding their status.

Centre Manager Philip Kearton-Smith said thanks to the overwhelming generosity of   Livetech we can now communicate with people in a way we have not been able to before. We can now invite individuals to directly  comment on issues that affect    them whilst gaining support from others, which is something that    very few if any other HIV organisation do.  It is however something that service-users attending the centre have been asking for for some time.

Paul Levy Managing director of Livetech said he was really   pleased to be able to help out.  We were really impressed with the way Philip wanted to make a difference in how those affected could directly give feedback to issues that really affect them.
