Styles of Digital Hearing Aids
Traditionally Hearing Aids have been in the ear (ITE) or behind the ear (BTE). However this has changed in recent years with the advent of Open Ear Technology and Canal Receiver Technology (CRT). These aids are worn like BTEs but are much smaller with micro tubing, so are much more comfortable and discreet than conventional behind the ear aids. More information on these new technologies is given at the bottom of this page. The illustrations below show the more traditional ITE type aids (Full Shell, Half Shell, Canal and CiC), with the newer Open Fitting/CRT shown on the far right.

Selecting hearing aids with the appropriate features will depend on many factors. If special features, such as directional microphones, are required, a smaller hearing aid will not be large enough to house this feature.

Ear anatomy
Some ear canals are very tiny, making it almost impossible to fit a CIC.

Lifestyle needs
If you enjoy being outdoors, you may require a different aid than someone who enjoys the symphony.

Manual dexterity
ITC and CIC hearing aids are easy to insert but require steady hands.
